About This Station

Walk through a forest and it is easy to see individual trees.

Look more closely, and another story begins to appear.

Beneath the soil, roots connect with fungi that help plants absorb water and nutrients. Bacteria transform minerals into forms plants can use. Earthworms and countless tiny organisms recycle leaves into fertile soil. Above ground, insects pollinate flowers, birds disperse seeds and countless animals help maintain the balance of the ecosystem.

Every living organism both gives and receives.

Plants provide food, shelter and oxygen.

Fungi transport water and nutrients.

Microorganisms recycle organic matter.

Pollinators help plants reproduce.

Predators help maintain healthy populations.

Together these relationships form a living community where energy, nutrients and information move continuously through the garden.

The edible forest is not simply a collection of individual species.

It is a network of living partnerships.

When we begin to see these relationships, we discover that the health of every organism depends upon the wellbeing of many others.
